Af denne Legende har Arne Magnussøn i A. M. 670qv afskrevet et Brudstykke, hvorom han bemærker: „Fragmentum hocce accurate exscriptum est ex folio pergameno disrupto ex libro in folio Regali. folium istud in Islandia nactus sum. erat satis vetustum, exaratum grandiori scriptura, sed non satis accurate. Fuitque sine dubio hoc volumen, antequam discerperetur, egregius et satis magnificus codex. Legendarium absque dubio erat, sine cantibus vel aliis officiis.“ Fragmentet er (ikke ganske nøiagtigt) aftrykt hos Langebek (III, 3-4). Fuldstændig, men i forkortet Form findes Legenden i Breviarium Nidrosiense fol. ooV-ooVIII, optrykt hos Langebek (Scr. rer. Dan. IV, 15-22).&lt;br /&gt;

Jeg har lagt Bruddstykket (betegnet Leg.) til Grund, saa langt det rækker, idet dog flere Læsemaader er optagne fra Breviariet (betegnet Brev.); men for Begyndelsen og Sluten har jeg kun havt at følge Breviariet, hvis fleste Feil allerede var rettede af Langebek&amp;lt;ref&amp;gt;Legenden om Seljemændene har i Sluten af Middelalderen været kjendt i Tyskland, rimeligvis indført med de Lübeckske Bergefarere (Daae, Norges Helgener S. 16l). I Herman Grevens Udg. af Usuardi Martyrologium (Kølln 1515) er nemlig optaget ved 8de Juli denne Notits: „Sumnivæ virginis et sociorum ejus martyrum, qui de Hibernia egressi in Norbegia coronas martyrii assecuti sunt“ - den eneste Beretning, som de lærde Bollandister kjendte om Seljemændene (Acta Sanctorum mensis Julii Tom. II).&amp;lt;/ref&amp;gt;.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Hvis man turde stole paa Udtrykket „venerabilis memoriæ“ (S. 151&amp;lt;sup&amp;gt;30&amp;lt;/sup&amp;gt;) om Biskop Paal, maatte Legenden være forfattet efter dennes Død i 1194, altsaa tidligst under hans Eftermand Martin (1194-1217). Disse Ord - eller ialfald „memoriæ“ - kan imidlertid let være tilføiet efter Biskopens Død, da det er sandsynligst, at Legenden blev optegnet strax efter Skrinlægningen i 1170, medens endnu Traditionerne fra Selja var levende i det Bergenske Præsteskab. Denne Formodning bekræftes ved, at den skrevne Legende aabenbart ligger til Grund for Fortællingen i [[Óláfs saga Tryggvasonar|Odd Snorressøns Olavssaga (kap 28-30)]] (Fnm. S. X, 279-83, fuldstændigere i Munchs Udgave S. 24-26), forfattet c. 1190-1200. Afvigelserne bestaar dels i, at Legenden er indordnet i Olav Trygvessøns Historie, saa at der først fortælles om Relikviernes Opdagelse, derpaa Sunnivas Historie, dels ogsaa i at Legenden har faaet væsentlige Tillæg: de to „mercatores“ er bleven Storbønder fra Fjordene, hvis Navne kjendes, og Sunniva har faaet til Broder og Følgesvend Albanus, til hvem Selje-Klostret var indviet&amp;lt;ref&amp;gt;Derimod er det urigtigt, naar Daae (Norges Helgener S. 141) fremhæver, at i Odds Beretning ikke omtales noget Ophold af Hellige paa Kinn, se Munchs Udg. S. 26: komo til eyanna er fyrr voro nefndar (&amp;amp;#596;: Selja og Kinn).&amp;lt;/ref&amp;gt;.&lt;br /&gt;

Disse Tillæg kan dog ikke være Traditioner fra Selje, thi her vidste man, at Klostret var indviet til den engelske Protomartyr Albanus, hvis Hoved opbevaredes her&amp;lt;ref&amp;gt;se Fnm. S. I, 231.&amp;lt;/ref&amp;gt;; kun hvor man stod denne Tradition fjernere - som paa Island -, kunde Klostrets Helgen være knyttet til Sunniva-legenden; de to Storbønder fra Fjordene, hvis Navn Legenden ikke kjender, er ogsaa aabentbart laante fra Sagnet om Trygve Olavssøns Død&amp;lt;ref&amp;gt;Bugges Bemærkning i Daaes „Norges Helgener“ S. 158.&amp;lt;/ref&amp;gt;. Fortællingen hos Odd henviser til en Forfattelse kort efter 1170, thi ogsaa her omtales Flytningen til Bergen&amp;lt;ref&amp;gt;Naar det stockholmske Haandskrift efter en rigtig Beskrivelse af Hovedkirken (&amp;amp;#596;: Klosterkirken paa Selja) og Kapellet (&amp;amp;#596;: Sunnivas Kirke oppe i Fjeldet) tilføier: „Oc i Selio ero fim kirkivr ok þar er fylkis kirkia ok Kriz kirkia ok Mariv kirkia ok Mikials kirkia Albanus kirkia ok Svnnifo kirkia“, synes dette at være en senere Interpolation, som man ikke tør fæste nogen Lid til.&amp;lt;/ref&amp;gt;.&lt;br /&gt;

Odds Beretning om Sunniva blev, skjønt tidligt oversat paa Islandsk, ikke optagen i Kongesagaerne fra 1ste Halvdel af 13de Aarhundrede; derimod indlemmedes den i den store Olav Trygvessøns Saga og er saaledes her bevaret i flere Haandskrifter fra 14de Aarhundrede; men Forf. af denne Saga har udskilt Beretningen om Albanus, idet han paaberaaber sig Vidnesbyrd fra Mænd, der har været i Selja, for at den der dyrkede Albanus var den engelske Helgen.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Det sees af selve Legenden, at man i Norge ikke vidste eller kunde vide andet om de Hellige, end at en Skare fremmede havde landet paa Selja og Kinn og opholdt sig der længe, og at de, som landede paa Selja, var dræbte af Stenskred, førend Landets Indbyggere kom for at fordrive dem. Det eneste Navn, Legenden kjender, er Sunniva, og dette Navn var allerede ved Midten af 11te Aarhundrede knyttet til Legenden&amp;lt;ref&amp;gt;Daae, Norges Helgener S. 159.&amp;lt;/ref&amp;gt;; hvis dette Navns Nationalitet kan bestemmes, gives os derved en Antydning af, hvem der har digtet eller appliceret Legenden. Prof. Bugge har ment, at Sunniva er den nordiske Form for det frankiske Sunnoveifa; men Ivar Aasen har med Rette gjort opmærksom paa det norske Navns Lighed med flere gammel-engelske Navne som Brihteva, Edeva, Godeva, Leveva, Ulfeva (i ældre Form Byrhtgifu, Eadgifu, Godgifu, Leefgifu, Ualfgifu) og Ælfgifu = Alfiva&amp;lt;ref&amp;gt;Ivar Aasen, Norsk Navnebog S. 75.&amp;lt;/ref&amp;gt;. Navnet kan ogsaa virkelig paavises i England: Sonneva hed en Kvinde i York paa Vilhelm Erobrers Tid&amp;lt;ref&amp;gt;Domesdaybook I, 298: Willelmus de Perci habet XIIII monsus horum hominum Bernulfi, Gamelbar, Sort, Egbert, Selecolt, Algrim, Norman, Dunstan, Odulfi, Weleret, Ulchel, Godelent, Sonneuæ, Otberti.&amp;lt;/ref&amp;gt; og Sunieva en Kvinde i Edgeworth i Midten af 12te Aarhundrede&amp;lt;ref&amp;gt;in villa quæ Egewerde nominatur Richardus Sunieve mulieris pauperculæ filius. Miracula S. Thoniæ ant. Benedicto IV, 76 (Materials for the history of Thomas Becket vol. II, 245).&amp;lt;/ref&amp;gt;. Dette gjør det efter min Mening sikkert, at Legendens første Fortællere har været Englændere; men Legenden oplyser jo, af de, der satte Helligdommens Opdagelse i Scene, var Olav Trygvessøn, der var døbt i England, og hans Missionsbiskop Sigvard, der netop var en Englænder. Den ældste Beretning om disse Hellige i Scholie 141 til Adam af Bremen - vistnok forfattet af Adam selv eller ialfald samtidig - nævner rigtignok Olav den hellige istedenfor Olav Trygvessøn som den, der byggede Kirken i Selja, men dette Vidnesbyrd har ved sin Partiskhed ringe Betydning; den bremiske Kirke betragtede Olav Trygvessøn, der var døbt i England og knyttede den norske Kirke til den engelske, som halv eller hel Hedning og kjendte ingen Kristendom i Norge før St. Olav og Tilknytningen til Bremen. Jeg finder saaledes al mulig Grund til at betragte de Dele af Legenden, som man i Norge kunde kjende, som væsentlig historiske; derimod tør det vel ansees for utvivlsomt, at hvad der fortælles om de Helliges Herkomst og om den irske Kongedatter er et Laan fra andre Legender. Mest beslægtet er den tydske Ursula-legende&amp;lt;ref&amp;gt;Daae, Norges Helgener S. 142 ff.&amp;lt;/ref&amp;gt;; maaske kan ogsaa nævnes Legenden om den irske Helgeninde Edana el. Moduenna, der ialfald i Skotland fortaltes saaledes, at hun for en paatrængende Beiler flygtede fra Irland over Havet til Skotland, hvor hun grundlagde kristne Kirker&amp;lt;ref&amp;gt;Skene, Celtic Scotland II, 38, sml. Acta Sanctorum for 6te Juli (Darerca).&amp;lt;/ref&amp;gt;.&lt;br /&gt;

Legenden synes oprindelig knyttet til begge Øerne Kinn og Selja; derfor findes i Love fra Midten af 12te Aarh. den 8de Juli betegnet som: þæirra hæilaghra messa er huila i Kin oc i Sæliu (Borg.) eller þæirra messodagr er huila i Kin oc Sæliu (Eids.)&amp;lt;ref&amp;gt;NgL. I, 348, 378.&amp;lt;/ref&amp;gt;. Men da Kirken i Selja c. 1070 blev Biskopssæde og bevarede denne Rang indtil Translationen i 1170 og da her i Midten af 12te Aarhundrede ogsaa grundedes et Benediktinerkloster, er det naturligt, at Selja nesten ganske fortrængte Kinn i Traditionen. De Mirakler, som knyttedes til Legenden, henføres alle til „Sancti in Selio“ eller til „Sunnivæ basilica“ (&amp;amp;#596;: i Selja), og den Hymne, der digtedes om Miraklerne, er tydeligvis forfattet i Selja og før Translationen; derfor har jeg troet at burde optage den i Texten S. 152, medens Resten af Officiet paa 8de Juli er aftrykt i Tillæg IV.&lt;br /&gt;
