By Jakob Jakobsen The oldest surviving document of the Faroe Islands dates from 1298 and is called Seyðabrævið – The Sheep Letter. It is a supplement to the Norwegian law from 1274 and deals with various aspects of sheep farming. Here you can read about taming of wild sheep, what to do about sheep thieves or aggressive sheep dogs. The letter has also regulations about the distribution of whale meat and flotsam. |

By Vilhelm B. Hjort Vilhelm B. Hjort's Den gamle Edda is one of the lesser known Danish translations of The poetic Edda. It contains all the mythological and heroic poems as well as the obscure poem Hrafnagaldr Óðins and the transition poem Sólarljóð, which is strongly influenced by Christian thinking. The translator also gives a short commentary on the mythological part of the book. Hjort was a lawyer by profession but deeply occupied by Old Norse poetry. – This is a publication from HEIMSKRINGLA reprint and is available here. | |
