The Skálholt map, drawn by Icelandic teacher Sigurd Stefánsson, combines elements of the sagas of Icelanders with more recent knowledge of the North Atlantic. Moving counter-clockwise around the Atlantic from the top-right corner, the Latinized Norse placenames and their modern English equivalents are:
The three islands in the Mare Glaciale are from top to bottom:
The moutain on Greenland is labelled Huidserk (Hvitserk), and a ford on Greenland is labelled Heriolfsnes (Herjolfsnes). The central caption reads, Siurdi Stephanii terrarúm hÿperborearũ delineatio - Año 1579. Several areas are labelled with the letters A to H.
