::::::::::When the god Thor had once been grossly humiliated among the giants and his hammer had proved ineffective, he stood deeply shaken and confused outside their gate, ready to return home. Then the giant Utgard-Loki approached him, first to rub salt in the wound by asking how Thor himself felt the visit had gone, and then to tell him that it had all been one great illusion. And if he doubted this, he and his companions on the journey home could simply look to see if they did not find traces in the landscape of his hammer. - The place names which this book deals with are precisely such traces in the landscape of pre-Christian religion. They are the group of names called sacral ''place names'', i.e. names which tell of the old gods and the old cult sites. – Now you can read the entire book online on '''[[Stednavne og førkristne kultsteder (clm)|Heimskringla]]'''.

::::::::::The largest medieval Icelandic manuscript is the Flateyjarbók which goes back to the end of the 14th Century. It is named after it's owner an Icelandic farmer on the island of Flatey. In the year 1662 the learned bishop Brynjolf Sveinsson gave the book as a present to the Danish king Frederik III, who placed it in the Royal Library of Copenhagen. In 1971 the manuscript returned to Iceland and is now preserved in the Árni Magnússon Institute for Icelandic Studies. In the years 1860-68 C. R. Unger and G. Vigfússon published the entire manuscript in three huge volumes – almost 2000 pages. Volume one of this massive work is now fully digitalized on Heimskringla.

::::::::::'''Nordens ældste digt - Vølvespå''' is a brief monograph about the most important poem of the Poetic Edda – ''The Völuspá''. The author Frederick Hammerich places the poem within its historical context and thoroughly examines its main themes and their significance, taking into consideration the emerging Christian way of thinking. In the final part of the book, the author offers his own translation of the poem alongside the Old Norse text.

Furthermore we want to emphasize that a text on the Internet should always be compared to the original before it is used in books (quotes, references etc.)

'''Q: I am not able to get access to all the pages as I am being asked for a username and a password. Can I get a password from you?'''
A: Unfortunately not. For copyright reasons a small part of our text material is password-protected and inaccessible to the general public. In individual cases I may give restricted access to the password-protected collection if someone is contributing with relevant text material to the collection.

'''Q: How can I contribute to the project?'''
A: The HEIMSKRINGLA - project needs practical as well as financial contributions. See the [[About the project «Norrøne Tekster og Kvad»|information page]] about financing, voluntary proofreading and technical assistance. All contributions will be received with gratitude.

'''Q: I am a student who needs help with my assignment. Can you help me?'''
A: Unfortunately we cannot do that. Consult your teacher or local librarian. You are of course free to make use of the material from heimskringla.no for your assignment: if you do so, please remember to make references. Generally speaking, however one must be very careful in using sources from the Internet for assignments and other schoolwork, as there is much misinformation on the Internet.

'''Q: Can you send me a message when a page is updated with new material?'''
A: All information about updates and other relevant matters can be found on our [http://www.facebook.com/heimskringla Facebook page].

'''Q: The text I am looking for is not to be found in the "Norrøne Tekster og Kvad" - project. Will you be so kind as to publish it for me?'''
A: The aim is to make "Norrøne Tekster og Kvad" as comprehensive as possible. In practice the greatest limitation is the acquisition of text material. It goes without saying that such a wide-ranging project cannot be completed in all fields at the same time. Which areas are finished first and how broadly or well the coverage is, will depend on who is contributing to the project at a given time.

HEIMSKRINGLA

Velkommen transparent.png

HEIMSKRINGLA is the largest collection of Old Norse and Nordic source texts on the internet – currently some 7500 titles.

HEIMSKRINGLA primarily consists of eddic texts, sagas, and scaldic poetry, secondarily of background material and sources related to Sami culture.

HEIMSKRINGLA is based on the belief that these texts – as part of our common cultural heritage – should be freely available to everyone.

Stöng indgang.jpg
Stednavne og førkristne kultsteder
by Carsten Lyngdrup Madsen, 2018.
When the god Thor had once been grossly humiliated among the giants and his hammer had proved ineffective, he stood deeply shaken and confused outside their gate, ready to return home. They are the group of names called sacral place names, i.e. names which tell of the old gods and the old cult sites. – Now you can read the entire book online on Heimskringla.

Nordens ældste digt
– Vølvespå

by Frederik Hammerich, 1876

Nordens ældste digt - Vølvespå is a brief monograph about the most important poem of the Poetic Edda – The Völuspá. The author Frederick Hammerich places the poem within its historical context and thoroughly examines its main themes and their significance, taking into consideration the emerging Christian way of thinking. In the final part of the book, the author offers his own translation of the poem alongside the Old Norse text.
