HEIMSKRINGLA HEIMSKRINGLA is the largest collection of Old Norse and Nordic source texts on the internet – currently some 7300 titles. HEIMSKRINGLA primarily consists of eddic texts, sagas, and scaldic poetry, secondarily of background material and sources related to Sami culture. HEIMSKRINGLA is based on the belief that these texts – as part of our common cultural heritage – should be freely available to everyone.		SHOP
WE PRESENT: digitalized Førkristen jul by Sophie Bønding It is a widespread belief that when Christianity came to the Nordic countries around the year 1000, the Christian celebration of Christ's birth replaced an ancient pagan solstice festival. However, it's not that straightforward. Before the Christianization, the word jul, Old Norse jól, seemingly referred to a pagan seasonal festival, but its temporal placement, conceptual content, and cultic expressions have been the subject of intense debate within research. This debate persisted until around 1960, after which it has been more or less dormant, apart from a few recent contributions made after the year 2000.
